Your last review before science TAKS day!

Let's use a new online resource to help you prepare for the science TAKS.

TRACK is an easy interactive site that will check your understanding and give you instant feedback on science topics that will be on TAKS. Follow this link to get started. You'll create your own username and password. Record it so you can remember it when you log in next time.

Physics and TAKS Week review

If you are not taking science TAKS this week use this link to the PHET virtual simulation lab to complete your Electromagnetic Spectrum lab assignment. You should have a printed copy of the lab questions in front of you.

If you finish this lab you may work experiment with any of the other Physics simulations on the PHET site. (The entire list may be found here)

Review, Review, Review

If you are taking the science TAKS next week you will visit two different online resources to review.

  1. Go to this link and answer the review questions online. You will receive your score and feedback after each question.

  2. After answering all the review questions, use the Study Guide and open a new tab in your browser, then navigate to the Science TAKS Moodle (elearn.mesquiteisd.org)

  3. Begin with objective 2 and attempt each quiz. For a concept you're needing review on please use the resources under that objective and the TEA Online Study Guide to refresh your memory.

  4. Do this for each objectives 2, 3, and 4. We'll look at Objective 5 (Physics) next class.

If you have passed the TAKS test follow the instructions below.

  1. Go to this link and click on the Objective 5 (physics) review. These are the concepts that will be asked on your final test later this six weeks.

  2. Go to the Science Moodle and answer the quiz questions for Objective 5 (physics). (elearn.mesquiteisd.org)

How to access the science Moodle:

  1. Go to elearn.mesquiteisd.org

  2. Log on with school username and password.

  3. Click on High Schools

  4. Subcategory- WMHS

  5. Subcategory- Science

Energy Conversions and Wave Quiz

Today you will review how energy is converted. First, complete the ExploreLearning Gizmo on Enery Conversions. Use the internet to research the last part of the Gizmo on renewable energy sources. Next, complete the handout called "Energy Transformation". Finally, complete this online quiz on waves. You may retake the quiz a second time to improve your score. Report both scores to me next class.

Bending Light

Today we will continue learning about waves. So far we've talked about mechanical waves (sound waves or any wave that travels through a medium). Now we'll investigate part of the electromagnetic wave spectrum. Although electromagnetic waves include a huge range of frequencies, there is only a small portion that we can actually see. We call this the visible light spectrum.

Assignment:

  1. Check in at www.trainforlifenow.com to earn yourself a chance to win an iPad and help WMHS earn a chance at $15,000 to be used in classrooms.
  2. LOG INTO GAGGLE. If you haven't registered yet the direction can be found here. You will submit today's classwork (Explore Learning gizmo on light) to me electronically through your Gaggle email account. There is NO printed assignment today. Instead, you will complete it using MS Word. You CAN save your work in the online locker under your Gaggle account.
  3. Go to this site and read about light and the visible spectrum. Read through to the page titled "Raindrops: Nature's Prism"
  4. Next, complete the Explore Learning Gizmo activity called "Refraction".
  5. If you are unable to finish this today you will complete this at home and submit your completed Word doc via Gaggle.

Waves Introduction

We'll begin our study of waves today. The first place to start is by defining what a wave is and how one is generated.

Your Assignment:

Part I

To begin today visit www.physicsclassroom.com and the section on waves by clicking here.

Browse Lesson 0 on Vibration. You will find everything you need in sections a and b
The discussion here begins with Bobbleheads. Hopefully you know what these are but in case you're not sure, check ou the picture below.

Use your own paper and answer the following questions:

  1. What is vibration?
  2. What makes an object vibrate?

Continue to the section on vibration and write down what the following terms mean:

  1. Period
  2. Frequency
  3. Amplitude

Now, answer the "Check Your Understanding" questions at the bottom of the section on vibration.

Part II

Visit the Phet site at the University of Colorado by clicking on this link: Wave On A String. Play with the controls and explore how it works.
You will end the class period by completing a short assignment using this interactive. I have the inquiry handout to go along with this activity.

Energy Review

Work, Power, Energy are all related. The Conservation of Energy means that energy can not be created or destroyed, only transfered.

Use the Physics Classroom site to answer the questions you have been given on work, power, kinetic, and potential energy. Follow this link http://www.physicsclassroom.com/Class/energy/.

AC and DC Current, Circuit Review

Today we'll review series and parallel circuits and introduce AC and DC currrent.

First, go to this link at Physicsclassroom.com and read about types of circuits. This will help you as you complete an online simulation from the University of Colorado Phet website. Follow this link to find the simulation. (run it from the browser -- no need to download). Use your handout to complete the lab.

Finally, you will take a quiz on Ohm's Law and circuits using Google Docs. Use the paper answer sheet provided. Follow this link for the quiz.
